GREY GARDENS

Dir:  Albert Maysles & David Maysles & Ellen Hovde & Muffie Meyer
United States / 1973 / 100mins

To celebrate the release of That Summer, director Göran Hugo Olsson's companion piece to Grey Gardens, we're bringing the cult classic back to the big screen.

Grey Gardens tells the story of a pair of reclusive New York socialites who live together in a dilapidated Hamptons mansion. Big and Little Edie, the aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, invite us into their lives as they reminisce, sing, dance, yell at each other and watch approvingly as cats and raccoons befoul their rotting Long Island retreat.

Little Edie, still stunningly beautiful at 56, ruminates over memories of her thwarted romances and confides that she has to get out of Grey Gardens. Big Edie reminisces about her husband (from whom she has long been separated) and her youthful singing career. Wildly entertaining, it’s also a film that allows women to speak in their own crazy voices and, despite the backdrop of high society, it captures universal truths about family ties.
