My Armenian Phantoms is a docu essay in which personal (filmmaker’s father was the prominent actor Vigen Stepanyan) and public (a subjective history of Armenian film) are interwoven.
In My Armenian Phantoms Tamara Stepanyan plunges into the Soviet Armenian cinema “with a sense of loss and disappearance” chasing its and her own shadows and ghosts. The resulting film reveals the enduring soul of Armenian storytelling — its beauty, its struggles, and its spirit.
Through the history(ies) of cinema, the filmmaker who left Armenia after the collapse of the Soviet Union explores what “being Armenian” actually means today.
