Set in the super-fast, super-rich world of LA and New York during the finance boom of the early 2000s, Sour Grapes plunges us into the world of international wine buying and the mysterious Rudy Kurniawan.
Kurniawan quickly developed a reputation as a wine savant with an expert memory for taste and a reputation for offering tastings of rare wines from his huge cellar. In 2006 he made 35 million dollars in two wine auctions from the sale of his wine. Then in 2008 a renowned French wine producer realised that wine from his family’s domain was being sold from a year they hadn’t produced it.
Featuring a cast of obsessive collectors, outraged wine producers, suspect auction houses, and specialist FBI sleuths, directors Jerry Rothwell and Reuben Atlas seek to unearth the truth of where the wine came from.
