ARGERICH

Dir: Stéphanie Argerich
France / 2015 / 100mins

"A masterpiece of intimacy and restraint...a riveting essay on what passes, and what must not pass, between mother and daughter. Acutely painful and funny" - Arts Journal

Widely considered to be one of the world’s greatest living pianists, Martha Argerich has kept out of the limelight during her 50 year career, making her as elusive as she is beguiling to her many fans around the world. But what is it like to be the daughter of such a giant of classical music?

Stéphanie Argerich, the daughter of Martha and Stephen Kovacevich, has been filming her mother and two sisters for decades. Now, in her thirties and a mother herself, she has created this affectionate, often funny and remarkably frank family portrait.

Stéphanie films her mother as she wakes up with messy hair and answers questions in pyjamas, as she takes to the stage captivating audiences around the world, and as she spends time with friends and family. The film reveals the joys and difficulties of combining motherhood with an artistic career. It is a remarkable journey into the Argerich galaxy, with all its eccentricities, idiosyncrasies and problems, but, most importantly, love of music.

"Essential for classical music fans yet just as enthralling for complete novices - in fact, it's almost more fun if the viewer has no prior knowledge." Birds Eye View
