At first glance, Irish farmer Thomas Reid doesn’t seem much of a match for the multinational company with its eye on his land. The modest farmer lives alone in his dilapidated 300-year-old ancestral home, surrounded by his cows and chickens. The world of US computing giant Intel, and the Irish government’s policies on land grabs seem very far removed from his day-to-day farming life. Yet with everything at stake and the odds stacked against him, it’s crunch time for this most unlikely of heroes.
Director Feargal Ward captures Thomas Reid’s rural life and rebel spirit with nuance and grace. His desaturated colour palette and a bravura take on verbatim court reporting mark this out as an unmissable David-and-Goliath story for the age of globalisation.
