When beautiful Joyce Vincent died in her bedsit in North London in 2003, nobody noticed. Three years later her body was discovered surrounded by the Christmas presents she’d been wrapping and with the TV still on.
Through imagined scenes and interviews with Joyce’s former friends, lovers and colleagues, filmmaker Carol Morley pieces together a resonant portrait of a life that slipped through the cracks.
“In other hands, Joyce’s ordeal might have become a pretext for homilies about the modern world; but what interests Morley is the fragility of individual lives. These films have a way of mixing in the personality of the film-makers and tell you how the directors see the world. Such masterpieces rarely occur.”
