Filmed several years before the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, this films is an experiential journey through the war already happening in eastern Ukraine, on the cultural borderland between East and West.
Cities, coal mines, power plants and steel mills are on the frontline in a region that was once the industrial heartland of the Soviet Union. As director Louie Palu travels through Donbas, filming on both sides of this frontline between Ukrainian and Separatist forces, he finds civilians and combatants on both sides numbed and shattered by the ongoing conflict.
His unforgettable, arresting film serves as witness to the emotional impact on the people who call this fractured land home, fighting over their past and future identity. Supported by the High Commission of Canada in the UK.
