Country: France

Renowned filmmaker Claire Simon steps into high schools across France to explore the work of the acclaimed author Annie Ernaux, capturing how it is received by young people today.

A major figure in contemporary feminism and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2022, Annie Ernaux is seen by many as a source of individual and collective emancipation, blending the intimate with the universal.

By placing her ever-patient camera in the midst of classroom discussions, Simon creates a simple yet radical picture not just of Ernaux’s extensive body of work, but of the living impact of her writing. Students of all backgrounds seem to connect with Ernaux’s frank, autobiographical texts, reflecting on her experiences and on their own.

Playing alongside Writing Life is The Super 8 Years, in which Annie Ernaux transforms her home movies into an exploration of self & family life.
