Under the Flags, the Sun

For 35 years, Paraguay was under the authoritarian rule of Alfredo Stroessner, until he was overthrown in 1989, but precious little film material from the time remains.

Under the Flags, The Sun uses a mosaic of meticulously sourced, long-forgotten archive footage, from both inside and outside the regime, to examine the years of Stroessner’s rule. Propaganda films, foreign newsreels, declassified documents and found fragments uncover the hidden machinery of a dictatorship and expose how media cemented Stroessner’s power, controlled memory, and built a legacy that still lingers today.
