Join us for an evening of audio documentary with The Whickers.

‘Audio Creatives do It in the Dark’ is the theme of this year’s Audio Documentary Showcase hosted by The Whickers, a counter-intuitive evening of experiencing great audio on the big screen. Headlined by Ibby Caputo’s 2019 RAFA (Radio & Audio Funding Award) winning work, A Perfect Match, the showcase will explore what makes a great audio documentary with a mixture of listening and live discussion.

We will hear a sneak-peek from the 2020 RAFA Award winners Mads Mordigan (Back and North) and Priyanka Gaikwad (Unmatched Lives), followed by a live Q&A hosted by The Whickers’ Artistic Director, Jane Ray.There will also be a fun quiz to test your ‘sonic acuity’ by the celebrated sound designer Pez Andrews, founder of Moving Air.

A Perfect Match – Ibby Caputo / UK / 30min

Two close friends both suffered from the same aggressive form of cancer. After years of treatment, one lived and the other died. And while many variables factored into what happened, the woman who survived — reporter Ibby Caputo — couldn’t help wondering what role race had played in the outcome.

Back and North – Mads Mordigan / UK / 11mins

Two sex workers return to their small hometown in the north of England to produce a controversial comedy event, striving to deal with traumas, transphobia and stigma through humour and a host of parody characters.

Unmatched Lives – Priyanka Gaikwad / India / 12mins

Unmatched Lives delves into the stories of women who have decided, against all the tenants of their societal norms and familial expectations that they are not going to marry. It is an exploration of how single women in India from different castes, classes and religions are striving to find a balance between achieving independence and gaining the respect of those around them.

The Whickers were established in 2015 to fund and recognise original and innovative documentary. They seek to use the generous legacy of pioneering broadcaster Alan Whicker, to support emerging film and audio documentary-makers in the funding and production of director-led programmes.
