The Story of Lovers Rock, a uniquely Black British sound that developed in the late 70's and 80's.
Lovers Rock”, often known as romantic reggae, developed against a backdrop of riots, racial unrest and sound systems. Lovers Rock allowed young people to experience intimacy through dance – known as “scrubbing.” Inspired by female artists, it was also the UK’s first ‘girl power’ music. Shabazz, director of award-winning Burning An Illusion, uses a rich collage of memorable live performances, comedy sketches and archive to shed light on the forgotten music of a generation.
