At the age of 19, college student Kristi discovered a secret about herself that her doctors and parents had kept from her all her life. The discovery overwhelmed her, and also made sense of everything that had gone before.

She learned for the first time that intersex people like her exist, and that it’s commonplace for doctors to make decisions about gender at birth and carry out invasive interventions under a shroud of secrecy. In The Secret of Me, Jim – as he is now called – tells his own story, and uncovers a radical psychology experiment on twin babies that was hailed a precedent-setting success, until recently revealed as a terrible lie.

This gripping film goes beyond questions of ‘Nature vs. Nurture’ to consider the fundamentals of how we become who we become and who makes decisions about our bodies.
