In the autonomous Kurdish state of Rojava, northern Syria, a group of female fighters once dreamt of changing the world.
During the Syrian civil war, women and men in Rojava took to arms to defend democracy and the rights of women. Once celebrated in the West for their role in fighting against ISIS, they now find themselves abandoned by their allies, living in secrecy and fear and labelled terrorists by the Turkish government.
The Phantom Pain of Rojava follows a group of wounded soldiers over five years as they attempt to rebuild their lives in a safe house. Emmy-winning director Maryam Ebrahimi’s empathetic lens captures the deep sense of camaraderie, care and friendship that remains amongst the former guerrillas, who never stop believing in the Women’s Revolution they dedicated their lives to protecting.
