The greatest underdog story of the year, this delightful doc tells the story of a plucky local football team with a big draw in the Icelandic FA Cup.
In the tiny fishing village of Hellissandur, there is an incongruous football pitch. Kari Vidarsson’s father built it 25 years ago when he was the local team coach, hoping to christen it with an FA Cup home game. Unfortunately, they drew an away match and suffered a crushing 10-0 defeat. But now, Kari is determined to bring football home to the village, entering the FA Cup once again.
Directors Smari Gunn and Logi Sigursveinsson follow along as he pulls together his ragtag local team – a fisherman and his son, a pessimistic church warden and a mother of three – and they train for the match of their lives.
Winner of multiple festival audience awards, The Home Game is an uplifting celebration of team and community spirit, with a finale that will have even staunchest non-football fan cheering from the sidelines.
