When 90% of the women of Iceland walked off the job and out of their homes one morning in 1975, refusing to work, cook, or take care of the children, they brought their country to a standstill and catapulted Iceland to "the best place in the world to be a woman.”

The mass strike didn’t come out of nowhere though. The pioneers of the feminist movement in Iceland – known as the Red Stockings – were agitating for change and gathering momentum, understanding that to really transform society they needed collective action engaging women from across society.

Told for the first time by the charismatic women themselves and laced vivid archive footage, The Day Iceland Stood Still traces a simple idea that became a civic awakening.
