This profoundly moving and important film chronicles the fight for justice by survivors of Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries and Mother and Baby Homes.
Under the guise of moral rehabilitation, more than 10,000 women and girls became slave labour at these institutions between 1922 and 1996. Unmarried mothers, children born out of wedlock and young women regarded as promiscuous or unruly, were incarcerated, dehumanised and suffered physical and emotional abuse, out of sight of the rest of society.
Aoife Kelleher’s powerful film reckons with this all-too-recent history, and captures the ongoing struggle to hold the Irish government to account. Amidst the memories of a painful past, Kelleher mines a seam of hope and resilience, as survivors and supporters demand access to records, transparency, and the right for survivors to pursue legal action against church and state institutions.
