Taras Tomenko's award-winning Terykony (Boney Piles) is a moving portrait of a group children in Donbass, in the years before the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Nastya and Yarik live half a kilometre from the frontline, in an area devastated by the ongoing war, amidst bombed-out houses and a junkyard of destroyed buildings. The families scavenge scrap metal, and the children play on the scrap heaps and watch the sunset. The years of conflict have created traumas, but playing on the ‘boney piles’, the children hold onto their dreams.
