Waste on the shores, waste on the mountains. On ocean floors and deep down in the earth. Matter Out Of Place focuses on one of the most critical issues across the globe - the unsustainable volume of waste that human beings create.
Once again filming intricately composed fixed shots on an epic scale, Nikolaus Geyrhalter (Our Daily Bread, Homo Sapiens) travels from the mountain tops of Switzerland to the coasts of Greece and Albania, across Nepal and the Maldives, and to the deserts of Nevada, illustrating the sheer volume of rubbish we produce, and the endless struggle of people to gain control over it.
It’s an ugly subject, but rendered colossal and deeply striking by one of the greatest cinematic observers of humanity and its impact on the natural world.
