For Peruvian father Fernando, dubbing animations in his indigenous language is about more than just likes on YouTube.
Quechua is the most spoken indigenous dialect in South America, and it’s also an endangered language. Seeing how his dubbed clips spread joy and give Quechua speakers access to entertainment they’re usually excluded from, Fernando dreams bigger. The voice actor from Cusco sets his sights on an enormous task – to dub the whole of Disney’s The Lion King into his native language.
Runa Simi (the original name for the Quechua language) follows Fernando’s travails as he steps out of his comfort zone to fight for his dream – to see a Quechua-speaking Simba on screen.
Followed by a Q&A between director Augusto Zegarra and documentary journalist Carol Nahra.
This screening will be Open Captioned and a British Sign Language interpreter will be visible on stage throughout the Q&A.
