The story of the most successful sports dynasty in history. Red Army charts the rise and fall of the Soviet Union hockey team, lifting the curtain on the techniques and training of the punishing Soviet system you don't need to be a hockey fan to get swept up in his story of friendship and divided loyalties.

From the mid-1950s, the Soviet Union threw enormous resources into developing its ice hockey team, in a bid to project world-class power. The result was remarkable: the ‘Red Army’, as they came to be known, dominated the sport for nearly forty years.

Told from the perspective of the team’s captain, Slava Fetisov, Red Army lifts the curtain on the techniques and training of the punishing Soviet system and the incestuous link between sport and politics, revealing the high personal price these star athletes paid for their country.

Premiering to critical acclaim at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Gabe Polsky’s directorial debut makes inventive use of archive from both sides of the Iron Curtain, and you don’t need to be a hockey fan to get swept up in his story of friendship and divided loyalties.
