In his latest, deeply humane observational film, Nicolas Philibert (the director of 2002’s Etre et Avoir) takes us aboard The Adamant: a unique, floating day-care centre, moored on the River Seine. Here, people with mental-health issues can participate in an array of cultural and therapeutic activities – art, movement, poetry – and engage with a team of committed, if over stretched, therapists and support workers.
With just the occasional interaction from behind his benevolent camera, Philibert takes the time to observe the people who make use of this facility, the people who provide care and the community that they create together.
