In tribute to Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died in detention in a Russian prison on Saturday 16th February, we are re-showing Daniel Roher's Oscar-winning documentary, Navalny.
Roher’s film picks up with Alexei Navalny and his wife, Yulia Navalnaya, in the wake of an assassination attempt in 2020, as he recuperates in Germany following exposure to the nerve agent Novichok.
As he regains his strength, Navalny sets out to investigate his would-be-killers. Enthralling and intimate, the film unfolds with the pace of a thriller as it follows the poisoning and investigation – right up to its nerve-wracking final moments.
But, beyond the drama, Daniel Roher’s up-close-and-personal film is also a study of a fearless leader, intent on reform. It shows a charismatic, vital and tireless activist, who decides to board a plane right back to Russia, in the name of freedom for himself and his country.
Alexei Navalny was arrested on landing back in Russia in 2021, and was never free again. He was subsequently sentenced to 19 years imprisonment, and died on 16th February 2024, aged 47.
