Filmed at the Monterey Pop festival on a beautiful June weekend in 1967, the Summer of Love is immortalised in performances by Jimi Hendrix, Janice Joplin, Otis Redding, The Mamas & The Papas and many more.

On a beautiful June weekend in 1967, at the height of the Summer of Love, the first and only Monterey International Pop Festival roared forward, capturing a decade’s spirit and ushering in a new era of rock and roll.

Directed by Pennebaker and shot by Albert Maysles and Ricky Leacock (amongst others), Monterey Pop is just as iconic as it sounds, immortalised in performances by Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Jefferson Airplane, The Mamas & The Papas, The Who… the list goes on.

Pennebaker captured it all, immortalising moments that have become legend and setting a new standard in the process. His ability to create a dynamic scene in the edit, through lots of close-ups and messing around with the quality of light on the stage has influenced everyone that’s come since.
