In his tiny photography studio in a busy mall in Pakistan, Muhammad Sakhi Photoshops his clients fantasies into reality, adding their face to the background of their choice.
They want photos of themselves by a car, with a girl, maybe holding a Kalashnikov – and Sakhi can remove their blemishes and imperfections to boot.
Photojournalist and director Danial Shah also takes photographs to sell. Originally from Pakistan himself, but now living in Belgium, Shah’s ‘real’ images are sold to international news media.
As the two men take turns to interview each other, their easy bond reveals both their common ground and the huge gulf between their lives and opportunities. Through his interest in Shah, Sakhi reveals his own aspirations, beyond helping his customers with the photographic representation of theirs.
The short film Valerija will be playing ahead of our screenings of Make it Look Real.
