A poetic, intimate portrait of life in a crumbling, disused luxury hotel, where a group of survivors of the Abkhaz-Georgian war have lived for the past 30 years.
Following the little-known conflict between Georgians and the Abkhaz people in Abkhazia, many civilians were forced to flee the region, with thousands relocating to Tskaltubo, an abandoned tourist resort. Three decades later, the building has fallen into a state of disrepair and its residents are forced to leave. However, their hope and resilience remains intact, still dreaming of one day returning home.
A surreal yet entertaining observation, with much to say about displacement and the sense of home, Hotel Metalurg gives voice to previously unheard stories, just as the war in Ukraine raises spectres of the past for so many.
The screening on Tuesday the 26th of September was followed by a director Q&A. Hosted by film journalist Ian Haydn Smith.
