Details
In 2003, the life of an Iraqi farmer changed dramatically when the recently deposed leader of his country, Saddam Hussein, knocked on his door and demanded to be kept hidden.
For eight months, the 32-year old farmer, Alaa, hid the ex-dictator, creating a homemade bunker in the garden and inadvertently becoming Hussein’s bodyguard, maid, doctor, hairdresser and even friend.
20 years after US soldiers pulled Saddam Hussein out of the hole, director Halkawt Mustafa – an Iraqi Kurd who fled Hussein’s regime himself – tracks down Alaa to learn the incredible story of those 235 days. In his own words, richly illustrated with reconstruction, Alaa describes how they evaded 150,000 US soldiers scouring the countryside for so long, and why.
