To celebrate its 250th anniversary the Hermitage Museum opened its doors to director Margy Kinmonth for the first time. Revealing life behind the gallery walls with the curators and staff of this most secret of institutions.

The Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg was built by Catherine the Great in 1764 to house her art collection and now has over 3 million works including more paintings than any other museum in the world. To celebrate its 250th anniversary the building opened its doors to director Margy Kinmonth for the first time, revealing life behind the gallery walls with the curators and staff.

Kinmonth’s cameras travel through doorways, galleries and even underground to find the colony of cats which have lived on the heating pipes in the basement since the museum opened. She discovers the oldest, rarest and most precious of Russia’s greatest treasures. From Rembrandt to Russian masterpieces, Hermitage Revealed is a window into this closely guarded and until now very private institution.
