Latin America's political and social history gives the shocking context to today's deadly fight against agribusiness across the region, in this piercing, personal investigation.

To understand the daily violence against environmentalists and land defenders in Paraguay and Brazil, filmmaker Anna Recalde Miranda traces a haunting lineage from the state terror of fascist dictatorships to the ecological crisis of the present day. Doggedly she uncovers links between the anti-communist repression of the 1970s – which saw the mass disappearances of ‘subversives’, land grabs and political impunity – and the present crisis, in which monoculture crops make huge profits at the expense of the environment and indigenous rights.

Blending intimate personal stories with powerful historical insight, Green is the New Red exposes how the foundations of the global agribusiness empire were built on blood and silence.
