In 1947, Amos Vogel established a film club in New York called Cinema 16. He was determined to show there were alternatives to Hollywood.
Its aim was to invigorate citizenship and global responsibility, and Vogel managed to bring world cinema and new insights to a mass audience. The film is built around recent interviews with Vogel and clips from some of his classic screenings (including the only film made by legendary photographer, Weegee). In the USA in the 40s, his project was radical stuff and met with considerable opposition. Incredibly half a century on, this kind of endeavour is no less brave and radical.
