Haunting and hypnotic, Salomé Lamas' essay film explores the fluid borders of the former soviet union.
Extinction enters the dark and labyrinthine borderlands of what was once the USSR. Kolya is a young man from Moldova, who feels a strong allegiance to Transnistria – a communist breakaway state which is not recognised by the international community and does not legally exist.
Salomé Lamas’ haunting essay film follows Kolya on a fragmentary and dreamlike journey, encountering enigmatic strangers and decaying Soviet monuments. Borders between past and present, dream and reality, appear unstable, but Kolya’s encounters at the many state borders he passes are acutely real.
