Eccentric French shopkeeper-turned-doc-maker Thierry Guetta attempts to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner - with spectacular results.
“A film about a man who tried to make a film about me” – Banksy
The still anonymous British artist, Banksy, is renowned for his iconic, politically charged street art and for fiercely guarding his identity to avoid prosecution. Exit Through the Gift Shop traces eccentric French shop owner, Thierry Guetta’s, efforts to locate, befriend and film Banksy. The film follows Guetta as he attempts to capture the world of street art, a hybrid form of graffiti that began appearing in cities towards the end of the 90s.
Having successfully shot many of the most famous artists, Guetta turns his attention to Banksy who decides to turn the camera back on Guetta himself, with spectacular results. Challenging and incendiary this is a ‘true’ story of low level criminality, incompetence and companionship.
