For five years, Werner Herzog desperately tried to complete Fitzcarraldo, despite every possible setback, an evermore unhinged Klaus Kinski and his own die-hard insistence on hauling a steamship over a mountain.

Luckily, Les Blank captured it all in this riveting account of the whole crazed process: from losing cast members (Jason Robards Jr., Mick Jagger), to a prop ship trapped in rapids, and Herzog haranguing hundreds of indigenous people to pull the 320-ton steamship up a muddy mountain.

Anchored by an as-it-was-happening interview with Herzog himself, Burden of Dreams is a wild insight into his unflinching vision and the lengths he would go to to realise it.

Screening with a recorded introduction by Les Blank’s son, Harrod Blank, and Maureen Gosling, the editor and sound recordist on Burden of Dreams

4K Restoration executive produced by Harrod Blank, restoration by Anthony Matt, audio restoration by Nick Bergh, colour by Paul Cope, & new subtitles by Maureen Gosling.
