In 1958 fourteen-year-old Robert James 'Bobby' Fischer stunned the chess world by becoming the youngest Grand Master in history.

Over the next twenty years he established himself through outward genius, charisma and dashing good looks, only to disappear at the apex of his powers. His match against Soviet opponent Boris Spassky in 1972 was a media sensation, at the height of Cold War tensions this Match of the Century became the focal point for the US and Soviets.

The film documents Fischer’s later years, when he had become increasingly bizarre and isolated, to eventually spending his final days as a fugitive. Rare archive footage and insightful interviews expand this captivating story of a mastermind’s tumultuous rise-and fall.
