Details
A joint programme of two documentary elegies from the acclaimed Soviet and Russian filmmaker Alexander Sokurov, screening in the Pushkin House programme, The Lonely Voice of Man: Films of Alexander Sokurov.
Oriental Elegy captures the delicate beauty of a small Japanese fishing village shrouded in mist, evoking feelings of sorrow and inspiring profound inner reflection. This Betacam video piece can be described as a surreal journey of the author’s soul, doubting and searching for answers to fundamental existential questions.
Elegy of a Voyage, also shot on Betacam video, presents another meditative journey where the boundaries between memory, reality, and dreams are blurred. The author reflects on emigration and a forgotten homeland, where people once lived in a close-knit community, bound by shared fears and desires. Ultimately, Sokurov leads us through the ghostly halls of museums, where through art, we rediscover the eternal warmth of life and our collective longing to return to one another.
This screening is part of Pushkin House’s The Lonely Voice of Man: Films of Alexander Sokurov programme. Running from 1 to 15 November, this special event offers the opportunity to explore the major facets of Sokurov’s cinematic universe.
