In a derelict Gothic mansion on the outskirts of London, we join eight actors - four Macbeths and four Lady Macbeths - as they investigate key scenes and soliloquies from Shakespeare’s Scottish tragedy.
Sophie Fiennes’ immersive film offers privileged access to the experience of making theatre with pioneering practitioners, Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod of Cheek By Jowl.
This intimate film offers a different position from which to view acting. Guided by Declan and Nick, the actors work and re-work short scenes, animating the text in subtle, surprising and revelatory ways. Within the labyrinthine remains of the building, we watch as actors and spaces combine to give Shakespeare’s words seemingly infinite new lives, in a fascinating process that is usually kept far away from theatre-goers and the general public.
The screening on Monday the 1st of June was followed by a Q&A with director Sophie Fiennes and actor Sophie Khan Levy. Hosted by Charlotte Bogard Macleod.
