Australian Football League player Adam Goodes protests at being called an “ape” during a match and sets off a series of events which force Australia to examine its racist histories.

Adam Goodes is a superstar of the Australian Football League – so celebrated that he was named Australian of the Year in 2014. Goodes is also an Indigenous-rights activist – and increasingly determined to use his profile as a platform. When Goodes stands up to racial abuse during an AFL match, he unleashes a torrent of ugliness across the country.

Daniel Gordon peels back the layers of Goodes’ story, to reveal a country which is far from coming to terms with its past treatment of Indigenous people. That past includes a generation of aboriginal children, like Goodes’ mother, who were taken from their parents and forced to integrate into the white community. With a wide range of interviews, including those who think that Goodes has overstepped the mark, Gordon raises wider questions about identity and belonging – and what it means to be an Australian.
