PENNY SLINGER: OUT OF THE SHADOWS

Dir: Richard Kovitch
United Kingdom / 2018 / 95mins

Penny Slinger: Out of the Shadows is the incredible untold story of British artist Penny Slinger and the traumatic events that led to the creation of her masterpiece, the 1977 photo-romance, ‘The Exorcism’.

Coming-of-age against a backdrop of post-war austerity and the explosion of colour that characterised the 1960s counterculture, Slinger embraced her generation’s quest for personal freedom and sexual liberation, and channelled these into ground-breaking sculptures and collages.

Slinger played with Surrealist tropes with a radical and feminist edge and worked with subversive filmmakers such as Jane Arden.

Penny Slinger: Out of the Shadows gives extraordinary access to Slinger’s rarely seen 16mm films – including the 1969 film Lilford Hall she made with Peter Whitehead – and an insight into the dynamic group of British artists that pushed boundaries and made controversial, transgressive work.
