MONROVIA, INDIANA

Dir: Frederick Wiseman
United States / 2018 / 143mins

Located in mid-America, MONROVIA, INDIANA, (population 1,063) founded in 1834, is primarily a farming community.

Veteran master documentarian Frederick Wiseman takes us on an observational journey into the heart of one of America’s most conservative states, and the birthplace of America’s vice president, Mike Pence.

Forty-six million Americans live in rural, small town America. These towns were once the backbone of American life.

Monrovia, Indiana immerses itself in the day-to-day experiences of living and working in Monrovia, with emphasis on community organizations and institutions, religion and daily life in this farming community.

Wiseman’s latest film is a lyrical exploration of the significance of rural America, conflicting stereotypes and illustrates how values like community service, duty, spiritual life, generosity and authenticity are formed, experienced and lived.
