EXTINCTION REBELLION PRESENTS: THE MOON AND THE SLEDGEHAMMER + Q&A

Dir: PHILIP TREVELYAN
United Kingdom / 1971 / 78mins

"Man will invent things to destroy himself," says Mr Page, a farmer living with his family in the woods of Swanbrook, Sussex. Filmed 50 summers ago, the sentiments shared by the Page family in The Moon & The Sledgehammer resonate in our current climate.

In the remote wilderness, away from the hubbub of modern life, The Moon and the Sledgehammer observes how the family passes their time, each member spelling out their personal fantasies and philosophies to the camera.

For all their prodigious skills, they seem at first eccentric and quaint, their ideas tangential to our own; and without mains gas or electricity, their way of life is more connected to the rhythms of nature.

But in the end it emerges that they are in control of their world in a way that we can never be in control of ours.

The Moon and the Sledgehammer is a classic piece of British nonfiction filmmaking, that we’re excited to be screening on the Autumn Equinox.

This screening will include an intro/provocation from Extinction Rebellion and will be followed by a Q&A with director Philip Trevelyan, joined by activist Shaun Chamberlin.
