In her extraordinary feature debut, Vietnamese director Diễm Hà Lệ captures the life of a young girl caught between her community's traditions and the world she glimpses through her schooling and online.

Living in the mountains of North Vietnam, Di is a 13-year-old Hmong girl, with a dream to escape the destiny of many teenage girls of her ethnic group. But during Lunar New Year celebrations, Di will face the ancient Hmong tradition of 'bride kidnapping', where young girls are taken by potential spouses, who then negotiate marriage with the family.

Diễm Hà Lệ spent three years filming Di, creating a palpably close relationship, and a brilliant, compelling and challenging portrait.
