Discover legendary Cape Verdean singer Cesária Évora, the 'Barefoot Diva'.
Cesária Évora grew up in extreme poverty, grafting and singing in local bars for decades until she found enormous fame at the age of 50. An unlikely star of the world music scene, Cesária’s extraordinary voice brought the Cape Verdean genre of morna – filled with melancholy, longing and ‘saudade’ – to the world stage.
But wealth and fame never changed Cesária, whose only dream was to be free. Using previously unseen footage and home movies, Ana Sofia Fonseca crafts a low-fi, intimate portrait of a turbulent life, and an inimitable woman.
