An outsider fueled by relentless determination works his way into the inner circle of the Wu-Tang Clan, where his ambition and creativity converge in the making of an album poised to ignite global controversy.
Wu-Tang Clan’s seventh studio album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, was recorded in secret over six years, sealed in an ornate silver case, and first sold at a 2015 auction for a reported $2 million, under terms barring any commercial release until 2103.
In The Disciple, director Joanna Natasegara tells the story of the album’s unlikely origins and controversial reception, meeting Tarik Azzougharh – the Dutch-Moroccan superfan who talked his way into Wu-Tang Clan’s inner circle and became the driving force of the now legendary album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.
