While investigating Kenya's global tea industry, Nairobi journalist Bea Wangondu stumbles upon her own family's concealed secrets, pushing her to peel back the layers of Kenya's colonial legacy.
When the British colonised Kenya, they took control of prime tea-growing land, stripping Kikuyu people of Central Kenya of their lands and cultural identity. The plantations are still owned by some of the world’s biggest corporations, supplying the global market, with local Kenyan’s left to labour under abusive conditions on their own ancestral soil.
As Bea follows a local man’s legal challenge to retrieve his family’s stolen land, she discovers a murky world of hidden evidence and untold wounds. Set against the beautifully captured richness of the landscape, Kikuyu Land is a poetic, stunningly cinematic dive into a complex history.
