After 20 years abroad, Noriko returns to Nagasaki to clear out her late mother's home.
Sorting through long-hidden letters, she begins to excavate a past never spoken of, unearthing a family history entwined with the atomic bomb that fell on 9th August 1945.
Eight decades later, the legacy of the bomb hangs heavy like a mist over Nagasaki, as Noriko visits survivors and digs into a past that will help her to heal in the present.
Every word of testimony is uttered with dignity, and set against poignant images of the landscapes of Nagasaki. Through filmmaker Laurence Lévesque’s thoughtful storytelling and beautiful cinematography, Okurimono navigates the delicate realms of past collective trauma with grace, as it gradually becomes a meditation on remembrance and closure.
