In 1971, a group of the greatest African American soul, jazz and gospel artists travelled to Ghana for a historic, once-in-a-lifetime performance.

Artists including Ike & Tina Turner, Wilson Picket, The Staples Singers and Santana journeyed from New York to Accra, for an epic performance in front of 100,000 people, to celebrate 14 years since Ghana gained independence from Britain.

For most of the artists, it would be their first trip to Africa – a journey exploring personal roots, ancestral homeland, history, loss, pain and joy. As well as electrifying performances, Denis Sanders’s SOUL TO SOUL captures the artists as they visit local villages and meet Ghanaian performers, sharing their music and movement.

Little seen since its first release, but newly restored and re-released 55 years on, Soul To Soul now takes its place as one of the great concert docs, and a galvanising record of cultural exchange.
