Darkness and light, reflections and projections, a shadow moves across a landscape and underground. It touches things left behind, listens carefully to the memories of people who existed before.

Artist and filmmaker Kaori Oda’s haunting hybrid expands on her 2023 film Gama to explore the transgenerational memory of the caves of Okinawa – known locally as gamas – where communities sheltered from bombardment by US troops during the battle of Okinawa in April 1945.

Underground eschews conventional narrative to superimpose past and present, memory and sensual-haptic experience. Artist and dancer Nao Yoshigawa acts as the silent ‘shadow’ of the film, a mysterious figure stalking the borderlands between darkness and light. While ‘peace guide’ Mitsuo Matsunaga soberly recounts the tragic human history of those who sought refuge in the caves.
