Two friends battle freezing conditions to herd 2000 horses through Mongolia's coldest valley, in this cinematic ode to resilience, friendship and tradition in one of the world's most breathtaking and forbidding environments.
Each winter, as snow descends on the Tsakhir Valley in the Mongolian Steppes, herders set off to lead thousands of horses across the frozen landscape towards fresh pastures. For young herders Batbold and Tsagaana, this is both a daring job and an opportunity to reconnect with the traditions of their nomadic ancestors.
For four months, they move across the valley, protecting the herd from icy blizzards and wild animals, in what turns out to be Mongolia’s deadliest winter. For Batbold, it’s a transformative experience, but on the other side of the adventure, the lure of city life returns.
