BFI Doc Society present a selection of recent short documentaries funded through their Made of Truth Fund.

These four, varied films explore how the places we come from and the places we land make us who we are. The programme moves through intimate recollections of family histories, the challenge of finding a new home in a new country, and the struggles of individuals caught up in social circumstances beyond their control.

Several filmmakers will be in attendance for an extended post-screening Q&A, where they will reflect on their work and approaches. The Made of Truth: BFI Doc Society Short Film Fund supports emerging storytellers from across the UK to create new, cinematic and boundary-pushing non-fiction stories that respond to the changing world around us, supporting up to 15 short films per year using National Lottery funds.

Followed by a filmmaker Q&A.

Programme details

Adura Baba Mi | 15 mins | Dir. Juliana O. Kasumu

Intimate recollections by the filmmaker’s father, a religious leader within the Celestial Church of Christ, and the filmmaker’s mother, his once devoted wife.

A Story Left Behind | 14 mins | Dir. Asma Kabadeh

A researcher discovers the fragmented story of the first Somali woman to migrate to the UK city of Sheffield and goes on a journey to fill in the gaps.

Folk | 15 mins | Dir. Noémi Varga

The Hungarian revolution broke out in 1956, and that same year, my paternal grandfather illegally fled the country never to return. One year later he arrived in Canada as an asylum seeker, leaving behind my 4 year old father and my grandmother in Budapest. When I ask my father about these events, he avoids my questioning.

Folk is a personal investigation into the impact of my father’s self-imposed amnesia and intergenerational trauma, stemming from a desire for veracity and healing.

After Eight | 30 mins | Dir. Mos Hannan, Usayd Younis

After Eight uncovers the darker side of Britain’s post-pub curry culture. Telling the story of Satpal Ram, the film unveils a major miscarriage of justice in British history and sparks reflection on the ongoing struggle for racial equality.
