An unassailable spirit of resistance keeps Palestinians connected to the land in artist filmmaker Jumana Manna's exceptional exploration of the colonial power play over culture and food production.

Presented in partnership with London Palestine Film Festival.

Palestinians have traditionally gathered the wild edible plants ’akkoub and za’atar, but this foraging is now punishable by fines and imprisonment, in the name of natural conservation. Following the plants from the wild to the kitchen, from the chases between the foragers and the nature patrol, to courtroom defences, Foragers captures the joy and knowledge embodied in these traditions alongside their resilience to the prohibitive law.

Shot in the Golan Heights, the Galilee and Jerusalem, Foragers combines archive footage, fictional sequences and wry humour to spellbinding effect.

Foragers screens with short film Soup Over Bethlehem, curated by London Palestine Film Festival.

Soup Over Bethlehem (Dir. Larissa Sansour / 2006 / 9 mins)

Soup Over Bethlehem depicts an ordinary Palestinian family, Sansour’s own, around a dinner table on a rooftop overlooking the West Bank city of Bethlehem. What starts as a culinary discussion about the national dish ‘mloukhieh’ soon evolves into a personal and engaging conversation about politics – thereby emphasising the symbiosis of food and politics so indicative of the Palestinian experience.
