He was born illegally—a second child in one-child-policy China. After years of guilt and alienation, director Louis Hothothot tries to find his place in a family that seems to have moved on without him.

Louis Hothothot was a second-born child during the height of China’s one-child policy, and his parents paid a high price for having him. Five years after emigrating to Amsterdam, Hothothot travels back to China, the place of his ‘illegal’ childhood, to reconcile his differences with his family and assuage his lifelong sense of profound guilt.Confronting his parents and their choice to bring him into the world, despite damning social and financial implications, Hothothot discovers that they too harbour similar grievances.

As secrets are revealed and intergenerational trauma laid bare, Hothothot’s unique film gives unparalleled insight into the Cultural Revolution and the ongoing legacy of Maoism for the Chinese family.
